Business fiber in Detroit at a glance
Fiber is available to 29.6% of business broadband-serviceable locations in Detroit, Michigan at 100/20 Mbps or faster, against 22.4% of residential locations — 7.2% ahead of homes. That direction is not universal — of the 28 markets FiberNear holds comparable data for, 17 point the same way as Detroit and 11 point the other. Both figures come from the same FCC filing; the only thing that differs is which population the provider reported against.
- Fiber reaches 29.6% of business locations in Detroit, per FCC filings as of December 31, 2025.
- That is 7.2% above the residential figure for the same city at the same speed tier — so "there is fiber on this street" understates what a business here can order.
- Detroit ranks #28 of 29 markets FiberNear holds business-side data for, against a peer median of 61.8%.
- Business plans differ from residential on service-level agreement, static IP and contention — rarely on the fiber itself.
- Business fiber is quoted, not listed. Whether the building already has fiber to it is the single variable that moves the number most.

Why the business number is the one that matters
Almost every coverage claim a business in Detroit will encounter — from a provider's own map, from a comparison site, from a landlord — is the residential figure. It is the number that gets published, because it is the number that gets collected most visibly. The FCC also collects a business-side figure, and in Detroit the two differ by 7.2%.
That difference is not a rounding artifact of how the data is gathered — and it does not point the same way everywhere. Across the markets FiberNear tracks, business fiber runs ahead of residential in some and behind in others, and the split is largely about where the commercial buildings sit. Where business premises are concentrated in a dense, long-wired core, carriers ran fiber to those buildings early and the business figure comes out ahead. Detroit follows that pattern. It is a genuinely good sign — but it is a citywide share, not a guarantee for any one building, and the gigabit tier is where the remaining differences show up.

At #28 of 29, Detroit is the closest comparison in either direction — just above it sits Los Angeles at 31.4%, and just below, Tampa at 20.7%. Those are the markets worth reading next if you are choosing between offices, because the ranking is about how likely a given premises is to be servable at all — not about which city has faster fiber.

These are the fiber networks FiberNear tracks in Detroit. Most sell a business product alongside the residential one, usually under a separate brand or order path — and the two footprints are not always the same, which is exactly the gap the figures above describe.
AT&T Fiber
100% fiber-optic; plans commonly range from 300 Mbps up to 5 Gbps where available. Operated by AT&T Inc..
Which providers operate in each market is FiberNear's own editorial assessment, not an FCC figure — the FCC's public summary files report how much fiber reaches a city but not which brand owns it. Business availability, contract terms, service-level agreements and pricing are set and confirmed by each provider. FiberNear is independent and not affiliated with any of them.
What to ask a provider in Detroit
The availability percentage is where the question starts. These are the four things that decide whether a quote is usable, and none of them appear in any coverage map:
- Is there already fiber to the building, or is this a construction build? This is the single biggest driver of both cost and lead time, and providers will tell you if asked directly.
- What is the committed repair window, and what is the credit when it is missed? An SLA without a remedy attached is a marketing sentence.
- Are static IPs included, and how many? Needed for hosted services, VPN endpoints and some payment terminals.
- Is the circuit symmetrical, and is it contended with residential traffic? The upload figure is what most business use actually depends on.
Ask the same four questions of every provider that reaches the premises, and the comparison stops being about advertised speed. In Detroit, with 29.6% business coverage, the number of providers that clear the first question is usually smaller than the number that claim to serve the area.
