Fiber technology

FTTH (Fiber to the Home)

The full-fat version of fiber internet. A dedicated glass fiber runs from your ISP all the way into your house, terminating at an ONT on your wall. Every home speed grade advertised by fiber providers on FiberNear.com is FTTH.

FTTC (Fiber to the Curb) / FTTN (Fiber to the Node)

Fiber runs to a cabinet on your street, and the last 100 to 1,000 feet to your house is copper. Slower and less reliable than FTTH, but sometimes marketed as fiber. Ask the provider which one you are actually getting.

PON (Passive Optical Network)

The architecture most residential fiber uses. One fiber from the central office feeds up to 32 or 64 homes through a passive splitter. It works because the shared bandwidth still dwarfs what any single household uses.

GPON

Gigabit PON. 2.5 Gbps down, 1.25 Gbps up shared across up to 64 homes. This is the technology behind most 1 Gbps residential fiber plans.

XGS-PON

10-gigabit symmetric PON. 10 Gbps up and 10 Gbps down. The upgrade path most fiber ISPs are on right now. If your provider offers a 2, 5, or 8 Gbps plan, it is almost certainly running on XGS-PON.

ONT (Optical Network Terminal)

The box on the wall that converts the light coming down the fiber into ethernet or Wi-Fi. Provider-supplied. Plugs into your router (or is your router).

OLT (Optical Line Terminal)

The provider-side counterpart to the ONT. Lives in the central office. You never see it, but a failed OLT is the reason your whole neighborhood is offline at once.

Speed and quality

Symmetric speeds

Upload speed equals download speed. Fiber does this natively. Cable, fixed wireless, and satellite do not. If you make video calls, back up to the cloud, or upload photos and video, symmetric is the spec that actually matters.

Gigabit / multi-gig

1,000 Mbps and up. “Multi-gig” is the industry term for anything above 1 Gbps: 2 Gbps, 5 Gbps, 8 Gbps, 10 Gbps plans are all multi-gig. You need multi-gig ethernet ports and a Wi-Fi 6E or Wi-Fi 7 router to actually see the speed inside your house.

Latency (ping)

How long a packet takes to get to the other end and back, measured in milliseconds. Fiber is typically 5 to 15 ms to a nearby server. Cable is 15 to 40 ms. Satellite is 30+ ms (Starlink LEO) or 500+ ms (geostationary). Gaming and video calls live and die by latency, not raw speed.

Jitter

The variation in latency over time. Low jitter is what makes voice calls sound normal. Fiber’s jitter is usually under 1 ms; cable’s can swing to 20+ ms during peak hours.

Packet loss

How many packets never make it. Anything over 1% degrades video calls and cloud gaming visibly. Fiber is typically 0.01% or less.

Mbps vs MB/s

Megabits per second (the marketing number) versus megabytes per second (what actually shows on your download progress bar). Divide Mbps by 8 to get MB/s. A 1 Gbps (1,000 Mbps) plan tops out at about 125 MB/s of real file transfer.

Data cap

A monthly ceiling on how much data you can move. Fiber providers almost universally do not cap. Cable does. Fixed wireless does. If your household streams 4K, works from home, and games, an uncapped fiber plan is worth paying for.

Provider types and alternatives

ISP (Internet Service Provider)

The company that sells you access. Fiber ISPs listed on FiberNear.com include Verizon Fios, AT&T Fiber, Frontier Fiber, Ziply Fiber, Kinetic (Windstream), Ripple Fiber, Metronet, Google Fiber, and roughly 20 regional operators.

ILEC / CLEC / RLEC

Incumbent, competitive, and rural local exchange carriers. Verizon and AT&T are ILECs. Metronet, Ziply, and most fiber-only carriers are CLECs. RLECs serve rural markets and are the reason a lot of Wyoming and Nebraska has fiber but California suburbs do not.

Cable internet (DOCSIS 3.1, DOCSIS 4.0)

The technology behind Spectrum, Xfinity, Cox, and Optimum. DOCSIS 3.1 tops out around 1 Gbps down with much slower upload. DOCSIS 4.0 promises symmetric speeds but is still rolling out in 2026. If fiber is available, fiber wins.

Fixed wireless (5G home internet)

T-Mobile Home Internet and Verizon 5G Home Internet. A small box in your window pulls the signal from a nearby 5G cell tower. Cheap ($50 to $70 flat), no contract, but shared with cell users on the same tower and rate-limited during peak hours. Fine for most households, not fine for heavy uploads or gaming.

LEO satellite (Starlink, Amazon Kuiper)

Low Earth Orbit satellite service. Starlink is the incumbent, Kuiper is Amazon’s entrant launching commercially in 2026. Latency around 30 ms, download 100 to 300 Mbps typical, monthly service $80 to $120 plus a $349 to $599 hardware cost. Fills the gap where terrestrial internet is not available.

Plan terms and fees

Contract vs no-contract

A no-contract plan lets you cancel any month with no penalty. A contract (usually 2 years) locks the price but bills an early termination fee if you leave. Most fiber ISPs on FiberNear.com now offer no-contract by default. Cable operators still push contracts.

Installation fee

One-time charge to physically run fiber to your house and set up the ONT. Ranges from waived (Frontier promo) to $99 (Verizon Fios standard) to $199+ (custom drops). Watch for “free install” promotions before you sign.

Equipment rental fee

Monthly charge for the router and Wi-Fi gateway. $10 to $15/mo is typical. Some fiber ISPs bundle it into the plan price, some charge separately. You can usually bring your own router if the provider lets the ONT do bridge mode.

Autopay discount

$5 to $15/mo off the sticker price for enrolling in autopay. Nearly every fiber provider offers one. Not applying autopay is the most common way people overpay on their internet bill.

Bundled plans

Internet plus phone plus TV plus mobile, sold together. Frontier, Verizon, and AT&T all push bundles. The internet-only price is usually the honest number to compare across providers.

Price lock

A promise that your rate will not go up for a set period, typically 2 to 5 years. Verizon Fios and Frontier Fiber both offer explicit price locks. Cable providers rarely do; expect an annual rate hike.

Wi-Fi and equipment

Router vs modem vs gateway

On fiber, the ONT replaces the modem. A gateway is a combined ONT plus router in one device (most provider-supplied setups). A standalone router lets you upgrade the Wi-Fi without waiting for the ISP.

Wi-Fi 6 / 6E / 7

The generational standards for wireless. Wi-Fi 6 is the baseline in 2026. 6E adds the 6 GHz band for less congestion. Wi-Fi 7 (802.11be) adds multi-link operation and higher throughput. A gigabit fiber plan on a Wi-Fi 5 router will feel like a slow plan.

Mesh network

Two or more Wi-Fi access points that hand off between rooms. Eero, TP-Link Deco, Google Nest Wifi, and Amazon’s mesh systems are the popular consumer options. A single router in a corner of a 3,000 sq ft house will always feel slow in the back bedroom; mesh fixes that.

Static IP

A permanent public address for your connection. Most residential fiber plans use dynamic IPs. A static IP costs $5 to $15/mo extra and is useful for home servers, security cameras, or remote access. Business fiber plans often include one.

Fiber map / availability check

A second (or third) fiber provider building into a neighborhood that already has fiber. Common in Utah, Colorado, and Texas as regional carriers move into former Verizon and AT&T Fios footprints.

BEAD (Broadband Equity, Access, and Deployment)

The $42.5 billion federal program funding rural fiber builds through 2028. If your rural address is not on fiber yet, BEAD-funded builds through your state’s broadband office are the most likely path to getting it.
