Verizon Fios is fiber to the home. Optimum runs two networks: fiber in select areas, and cable where its fiber has not reached yet. That split decides most of this comparison. Against Optimum cable, Fios has a large upload advantage on its gigabit plan. Against Optimum Fiber, both sides advertise matching or near-matching upload speeds, and the choice comes down to which network has reached your street and what each offer includes. Check your address first, then compare the exact plans each provider will sell you.
Short answer: Verizon Fios if you can get it; Optimum if you cannot
Where Verizon Fios actually reaches the property, it is the better connection — fiber gives you upload speed that matches download, and that is the difference people feel on video calls and cloud backups rather than on a speed test. Optimum will usually reach more addresses in the same city, and its download speeds are competitive. So the question is almost never which is better in the abstract; it is whether Verizon Fios has been built to your street yet.
- Verizon Fios is fiber to the home, operated by Verizon Communications Inc.. Optimum is cable, operated by Optimum Communications.
- Verizon Fios: plans commonly range from 300 Mbps up to 2 Gbps where available.
- Optimum: plans commonly range from 300 Mbps up to multi-gigabit tiers where fiber is available.
- Both operate in 1 of the markets FiberNear tracks, so this is a real choice rather than a hypothetical one in those cities.
- Both are built out address by address. Whichever reaches your specific property usually settles the question before preference does — FiberNear checks that free.
Verizon Fios vs Optimum, side by side
| Verizon Fios | Optimum | |
|---|---|---|
| Connection type | Fiber to the home | Cable |
| How it reaches you | 100% fiber-optic | Hybrid fiber-coaxial cable, with fiber-to-the-home across part of its footprint |
| Speeds | Plans commonly range from 300 Mbps up to 2 Gbps where available | Plans commonly range from 300 Mbps up to multi-gigabit tiers where fiber is available |
| Where it runs | The Northeast and Mid-Atlantic, from Virginia up through New England | The New York tri-state area, plus pockets of Texas, Louisiana and the Mountain West |
| Known for | Consistently strong reliability scores and symmetrical upload speeds | Multi-gig fiber tiers in the sections of its network that have been rebuilt |
| Operated by | Verizon Communications Inc. | Optimum Communications |
Speeds and footprints are advertised by each provider, vary by address, and change without notice. FiberNear does not set or guarantee them.
Fios vs Optimum Fiber or Optimum cable: know which one you are offered
Optimum says fiber is available in select areas, and where it is not, service runs over cable. The Optimum name on an offer does not tell you which of the two you would get, so check the plan details before you hold it up against Verizon Fios.
Upload speed is where the difference shows. Verizon lists Fios 1 Gig at up to 940 Mbps download and up to 880 Mbps upload. Optimum's standard rate card lists its cable 1 Gig plan at 940 Mbps down and 35 Mbps up, and its 1 Gig Fiber plan at 940 Mbps both ways. The download figure is the same on all three. The upload is not.
At the top end, Verizon says Fios plans go up to 5 Gig. Optimum advertises fiber up to 8 Gbps download and upload, which it notes is not available in all areas. Treat both as advertised ceilings, not a statement about your home.
If both offers at your address are fiber, the upload gap mostly disappears and the terms matter more. Verizon says all Fios plans include router rental at no additional cost and come with no annual contract. Optimum says its fiber plans include equipment, with no annual contract on its Gig speeds. Confirm those terms on the exact plans you can order.

Gigabit fiber and multi-gig speed tiers: Verizon Fios vs Optimum side by side
Both networks publish tiered plans, and the tier class matters as much as the top-line speed. Here is what each side offers as a tier, based on the plans each provider currently advertises.
- Verizon Fios offers multi-gig fiber, up to 2 Gbps advertised where available.
- Optimum offers high-speed cable, advertised up to 1 Gbps on the top tier where available.
- Only Verizon Fios is fiber, so its gigabit tier delivers matching upload speed. Optimum's advertised gigabit tier is a download figure, and its upload runs materially slower on the same plan.
- Tier availability varies by address. A multi-gig plan advertised in a market is not offered at every address inside that market, since it depends on whether the local optical distribution supports it.
Tier classes are derived from each provider's own advertised plans and change without notice. FiberNear does not set or guarantee speeds.
Where Verizon Fios and Optimum overlap
These are the markets FiberNear tracks where both networks operate, so the comparison is a real decision rather than a hypothetical. The percentage is the share of each city's residential locations reached by fiber of any brand, from FCC filings — it describes the market, not either company's own footprint.
| Market | Fiber available | Cable available |
|---|---|---|
| New York, NY | 79.3% | 97.3% |

How often each one is actually available
Specifications decide which connection is better. Availability decides which one you can buy, and it is the part comparison pages usually skip. Across the 29 markets FiberNear holds FCC data for, this is how much of each city the two technologies reach at 100/20 Mbps or better:
- Verizon Fios is fiber, and fiber reaches a median of 64.2% of locations in a typical tracked market.
- Optimum is cable, and cable reaches a median of 96.2%.
- So in a typical market, Optimum's technology reaches about 32.0% more of the city — which is why the comparison so often ends up being decided by the address rather than by the plan.
Source: FCC Broadband Data Collection, residential fixed broadband, as of December 31, 2025. Figures are advertised availability self-reported by providers, not measured speeds. These are technology-level figures, not brand-level ones — the FCC's public summary files report how much fiber or cable reaches a city, but not which brand owns it, so no coverage percentage here should be read as a figure for Verizon Fios or Optimum specifically.
