Is Ziply Fiber better than Xfinity? It depends on the plans offered at your address. Ziply advertises symmetrical fiber plans, with matching upload and download speeds. Xfinity runs mostly on cable, but it offers equally fast uploads and downloads through its X-Class plans in limited areas. Before choosing, compare upload speed, included equipment, data allowance and contract terms for the specific offers you get, using each plan's broadband label rather than the advertised download speed alone.
Short answer: Ziply Fiber if you can get it; Xfinity if you cannot
Where Ziply Fiber actually reaches the property, it is the better connection — fiber gives you upload speed that matches download, and that is the difference people feel on video calls and cloud backups rather than on a speed test. Xfinity will usually reach more addresses in the same city, and its download speeds are competitive. So the question is almost never which is better in the abstract; it is whether Ziply Fiber has been built to your street yet.
- Ziply Fiber is fiber to the home, operated by Northwest Fiber, LLC. Xfinity is cable, operated by Comcast Corporation.
- Ziply Fiber: plans commonly range from 100 Mbps up to multi-gigabit tiers where available.
- Xfinity: plans commonly range from 150 Mbps up to 2 Gbps where available.
- Both operate in 2 of the markets FiberNear tracks, so this is a real choice rather than a hypothetical one in those cities.
- Both are built out address by address. Whichever reaches your specific property usually settles the question before preference does — FiberNear checks that free.
Ziply Fiber vs Xfinity, side by side
| Ziply Fiber | Xfinity | |
|---|---|---|
| Connection type | Fiber to the home | Cable |
| How it reaches you | Fiber-to-the-home | Hybrid fiber-coaxial cable, with fiber to a limited set of addresses |
| Speeds | Plans commonly range from 100 Mbps up to multi-gigabit tiers where available | Plans commonly range from 150 Mbps up to 2 Gbps where available |
| Where it runs | The Pacific Northwest — Washington, Oregon, Idaho and Montana | Around 40 states, concentrated in the Northeast, Mid-Atlantic and Midwest |
| Known for | Very high top-end tiers and a deliberate rural buildout program | The widest gigabit-capable cable footprint in the US |
| Operated by | Northwest Fiber, LLC | Comcast Corporation |
Speeds and footprints are advertised by each provider, vary by address, and change without notice. FiberNear does not set or guarantee them.
Ziply Fiber vs Xfinity: data caps, equipment and contracts
On the terms printed under the speed, the two are closer than the technology suggests. Ziply says its plans have no data caps and no annual contracts, and its most popular plans include a WiFi router. Xfinity says all of its current internet plans come with unlimited data and an Xfinity Gateway, with no annual contract.
The catch is older Xfinity plans. Xfinity says customers on previous plans may still have a monthly data cap, which it puts at 1.2 TB. If you already have Xfinity, check your plan in your account before assuming the newer terms apply to you.
- Confirm the data allowance on the exact plan you are offered.
- Ask which equipment is included and whether you can use your own.
- Check whether the offer carries a contract term.
Each provider's broadband label lists these details plan by plan, so compare the labels rather than the ads.

Gigabit fiber and multi-gig speed tiers: Ziply Fiber vs Xfinity side by side
Both networks publish tiered plans, and the tier class matters as much as the top-line speed. Here is what each side offers as a tier, based on the plans each provider currently advertises.
- Ziply Fiber offers gigabit fiber, 1 Gbps advertised where available.
- Xfinity offers high-speed cable, advertised up to 1 Gbps on the top tier where available.
- Only Ziply Fiber is fiber, so its gigabit tier delivers matching upload speed. Xfinity's advertised gigabit tier is a download figure, and its upload runs materially slower on the same plan.
- Tier availability varies by address. A multi-gig plan advertised in a market is not offered at every address inside that market, since it depends on whether the local optical distribution supports it.
Tier classes are derived from each provider's own advertised plans and change without notice. FiberNear does not set or guarantee speeds.
Does Xfinity offer upload speeds that match Ziply Fiber?
At some addresses, yes. Ziply advertises symmetrical speeds on its fiber plans. Xfinity says its X-Class plans (X-300, X-500, X-Gig and X-2Gig) offer equally fast upload and download speeds above 200 Mbps, but only in limited areas. So a comparison should not claim that every Xfinity connection uploads more slowly than it downloads.
Equipment matters here. Xfinity says customer-owned modems are not currently compatible with X-Class speeds, and that devices not certified for its enhanced speeds may miss its latest network upgrades. If you plan to use your own modem, ask what upload speed you will actually get.
- Open the broadband label for each plan offered at your address.
- Compare typical upload speed separately from typical download speed.
- Check the typical latency listed for each plan.
- Confirm which gateway or modem the offered speed requires.
If Xfinity offers matching uploads at your address, compare the other terms next. If it does not and upload speed matters to you, Ziply's symmetrical plans cover that need.

Where Ziply Fiber and Xfinity overlap
These are the markets FiberNear tracks where both networks operate, so the comparison is a real decision rather than a hypothetical. The percentage is the share of each city's residential locations reached by fiber of any brand, from FCC filings — it describes the market, not either company's own footprint.
| Market | Fiber available | Cable available |
|---|---|---|
| Seattle, WA | 77.1% | 97.7% |
| Portland, OR | 71.5% | 97.7% |

How often each one is actually available
Specifications decide which connection is better. Availability decides which one you can buy, and it is the part comparison pages usually skip. Across the 29 markets FiberNear holds FCC data for, this is how much of each city the two technologies reach at 100/20 Mbps or better:
- Ziply Fiber is fiber, and fiber reaches a median of 64.2% of locations in a typical tracked market.
- Xfinity is cable, and cable reaches a median of 96.2%.
- So in a typical market, Xfinity's technology reaches about 32.0% more of the city — which is why the comparison so often ends up being decided by the address rather than by the plan.
Source: FCC Broadband Data Collection, residential fixed broadband, as of December 31, 2025. Figures are advertised availability self-reported by providers, not measured speeds. These are technology-level figures, not brand-level ones — the FCC's public summary files report how much fiber or cable reaches a city, but not which brand owns it, so no coverage percentage here should be read as a figure for Ziply Fiber or Xfinity specifically.
